‘We were outstanding’ – Hayes impressed by relentless first half Chelsea performance

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said that her side’s performance against Servette FCCF last night was outstanding.

The Blues netted six first half goals as they simply blew away their less experienced opponents on their own soil. Chelsea added one further goal in the second half as they ran out 7-0 winners.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, Hayes hailed her side’s impressive display, highlighting their fast attacking play as a particularly pleasing factor.

“It is easy for me to say that (it was a simple victory) but they worked their socks off in the first half,” Hayes said. “I said to my assistants that were in the gantry at half-time ‘pitch-side you have no idea how quick that was’. Everything, the detail of everything, the detail of the pass, the movement, the finishes, the execution of every action, it could have been 7-0 at half-time, we missed chances.

“Credit to the players, they decided that they wanted to go up a level and my job is just to put the challenge there to them. I thought we were outstanding.”

Servette struggled to cope with Chelsea for the first hour of the contest before finally settling into the game in the last half-hour. While Chelsea were given far too much space early on, Hayes said that it was as a result of her side’s own excellent play to open Servette up.

Hayes added “You had to work for space, you have to earn those things.

“If you talk about individual decision-making whether that’s a ball out to Erin (Cuthbert) or Guro (Reiten), their first touch, their dribble and drives inside, the pace in which they did that, it’s not about the opponent, that’s about yourself. I thought our counter-pressing was good, the ability to maintain it for 45 minutes was the best that we have seen so far.”

Chelsea now turn their attentions back to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League with The Cityzens set to travel to Manchester City on Sunday.
