Leicester City have today confirmed that first choice goalkeeper Kirstie Levell will spend a period on the sidelines with a knee injury.
The 24-year-old sustained the injury last weekend as The Foxes went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at The Amex Stadium.
It is understood that Levell fell awkwardly on her knee and now needs an operation on her meniscus which will be followed by a period of rehabilitation of around three months.
Levell’s injury is a real blow to Leicester City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League survival hopes. While The Foxes are still searching for their first top flight point, Levell has been an outstanding performer in-between the sticks, earning herself rave reviews in recent weeks. The player was particularly impressive in recent defeats to high-flying pair Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
Demi Lambourne will now deputise for Levell in the coming months. Lambourne is a very talented goalkeeper herself with the player having impressed in the FA Women’s Championship for Leicester City prior to being sidelined with injury for a spell last season. The 25-year-old deserves her time to shine and there is every chance that she will prove her quality at Barclays FA Women’s Super League level.
Leicester City take on Everton in their next league fixture at The Pirelli Stadium on Sunday.
