Arsenal will be hoping to return to winning ways when they take on the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s bottom club Leicester City at Meadow Park on Sunday evening.
Jonas Eidevall’s side have lost back-to-back games over the course of the last week and the target is now for The Gunners to rebuild some momentum ahead of the winter break.
Ahead of the match, FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the statistics surrounding the fixture provided by Opta. Here are four facts which relate to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League meeting between Arsenal and Leicester City.
Arsenal have a great record against new league opponents
This is the first Barclays FA Women’s Super League meeting between Arsenal and Leicester City. The North Londoners have won their first Barclays FA Women’s Super League meeting with the last eight clubs they’ve faced, last losing in May 2014 against Manchester City. The gulf in class and quality between Arsenal and new league opponents has arguably never been bigger.
The two sides have met before
Arsenal and Leicester City haven’t faced each other in a competitive match since November 2008 when the pair met in the Women’s League Cup. Arsenal won 7-0 away from home, with Julie Fleeting scoring a hat-trick and Rachel Yankey, Kelly Smith and Ciara Grant helping themselves to goals. Leicester City also netted one own goal in the match.
History suggests that Leicester City will lose again
Leicester City have become only the third team in Barclays FA Women’s Super League history to lose their first eight matches of the season, along with Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2016 and Yeovil Town in 2017/2018. Both of those sides went on to lose their ninth match of those seasons too therefore the statistics suggest that Leicester City could follow a similar path.
McCabe could be key to Arsenal’s attacking game
Arsenal have scored four goals from corner situations in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this season, the most of any side. Three of those were assisted by Katie McCabe while seven of Arsenal’s last eight goals from corner situations have been assisted by the Republic of Ireland international. McCabe also created 16 chances in just three matches in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League during November, seven more than any other player. She has five assists this season, the joint-most of any player along with Fran Kirby.
The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Arsenal and Leicester City kicks-off at 6.45pm on Sunday evening and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football. Tickets for the match remain available by clicking here.
