Charlton Athletic’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup third round tie at Gillingham Women has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The Addicks were set to face their FA Women’s National League Southern Premier opponents at the Rochester United Sports Ground at 1pm but the pitch has failed an inspection after Kent was hit by a period of heavy rain.
A new date for the rearranged fixture will be announced in due course. This season’s competition rules state that in the event of postponement due to matters out of both clubs’ control, the game must be played on or by the following Sunday. Given Gillingham Women’s part-time status and the fact that Charlton Athletic face Watford in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup in midweek, it seems likely that the rearranged fixture will take place next Sunday. Should this happen, Charlton Athletic’s trip to Liverpool would be postponed until a later date.
Charlton Athletic were the overwhelming favourites going into this afternoon’s Vitality Women’s third round tie. Karen Hills’ side had won their last two matches in all competitions while they were 11 places above opponents Gillingham Women in the footballing pyramid.
The Addicks will now need to wait for the opportunity to secure their place in the fourth round draw alongside the 12 Barclays FA Women’s Super League clubs and today’s postponement could add some complexity to their fixture list.
