Chelsea ace Fleming named Canada Soccer Player of the Year

Chelsea midfielder Jessie Fleming has been named the Canada Soccer Women’s Player of the Year for 2021.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news earlier this evening via an official Canada Soccer press release. The 23-year-old wins the award for the very first time.

In 2021, Fleming made the most appearances, the most starts and played the most minutes for the Canadian national team. She also ends 2021 as the nation’s joint-highest goalscorer in the calendar year. The midfielder was a leading figure in Canada’s success at the Olympic Games in Japan where they won the Gold Medal.

At club level, Fleming helped guide Chelsea to another Barclays FA Women’s Super League title while she featured in their successes in the FA Women’s Community Shield, FA Women’s Continental League Cup and in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup as The Blues completed a domestic quadruple.

Fleming becomes the ninth different female winner of the Canada Soccer Player of the Year award. Canadian legend Christine Sinclair leads the way with the greatest number of award wins with the veteran having been voted the nation’s best player on 14 occasions.

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies has been crowned the winner of the Canada Soccer Men’s Player of the Year award for 2021.
