Everton boss Vasseur hoping to get the best out of depleted squad at Tottenham Hotspur

Everton manager Jean-Luc Vasseur says that he is aiming to make trouble for Spurs this weekend despite having to work with a much-depleted squad.

The Blue Girls take on a Spurs side who are aiming to finish 2021 in third place in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table and their task has been made all the more difficult by the fact that Everton may have a squad of just 14 players available.

When speaking in his pre-match press conference, Everton boss Vasseur explained the challenge that he faces, however, he stressed that the plan is to cause problems for the opponent.

“We still need to work out the team to face Tottenham but like any team, they have weaknesses and we will look to go there with an effective system and to be organised,” Vasseur said. “Once I have selected my team and the system, we will look to cause some trouble for Tottenham.

“The situation has changed, I don’t have 20 players to choose from for Tottenham, now it could be 14 players, so I need to know who are the strongest and fittest players to start the game.

“We will put our maximum effort into preparing for this game, we will look to make trouble for Tottenham and we will look to score.”

Vasseur has already seen his side face other top half of the table teams in Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United in his short time on Merseyside. The Frenchman has come to the conclusion that there are fine lines separating those sides and Everton and that building momentum and confidence will go a long way.

He said “The gap is narrow between a lot of teams – Brighton were third, now it is Tottenham and I think that Man U will push on.

“There is only six points difference between Tottenham and us but we do not have good momentum. If we go to Tottenham and don’t lose, we keep the same gap. Perhaps, in the future, when we rebuild some strength and confidence, I think we will win the points at Tottenham, against Brighton and maybe close the gap.

“For now, the priority is to keep the same gap, win if we can but get the best result possible. We will work hard to become better for the future.”

Everton’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
