FA Women’s Championship club Coventry United have been plunged into crisis with the club’s board of directors confirming plans to push forward with voluntary liquidation.
The writing was very much on the wall earlier today with a number of the club’s players and staff issuing heartbreaking personal statements indicating that they had lost their jobs, just two days before Christmas.
Coventry United’s board of directors issued a statement on the club’s official website this evening confirming their instructions to liquidate both the company and club.
The statement read: “With regret the board of directors have instructed BK Plus Limited to assist with placing the company/club into creditors voluntary liquidation.
“At this point we cannot go into detail.
“We would like to thank everyone for the support over the last seven years. The club will keep you updated on developments of the club’s future.”
Coventry United now seem set to be removed from the FA Women’s Championship while today’s news means that at least 20 senior players go into the Christmas break cruelly put out of work along with several members of off-field staff. While a number of the club’s talented stars could find new employment within the elite game in the near future, the harsh reality is that some may have to return to the part-time game to maintain a football career and could have been stripped of their one opportunity to carve out a professional career in the game.
In addition to the very sad news of players and staff losing their jobs, the FA Women’s Championship are set to lose a club who have entertained in the last two-and-a-half-years. While Coventry United have spent their time in the second tier battling relegation, their exciting attack has so often been their best form of defence. The Red and Greens have carved out a reputation for scoring wonderful goals and it is a very sad day which potentially sees a side who have always believed in their attacking principles leave the elite game.
The Football Association are yet to comment on the situation at Coventry United, however, an announcement is expected to be made in due course.
