As we go into Christmas, Chelsea’s Sam Kerr is the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s top scorer with nine goals.
How does Kerr’s record compare to the goal tallies of the top scorers in European football’s other major leagues? FAWSL Full-Time have taken the statistics from France, Germany, Italy and Spain to compare.
Kerr has netted her nine goals in just nine Barclays FA Women’s Super League games therefore she is the only top scorer from the five leagues to average a goal per game. FC Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas has the next best goal average of 0.86 goals per game with the Spanish league’s top scorer having hit 12 goals in 14 games.
The top scorer in Germany has the next best record with Bayern Munich’s Lea Schüller netting nine goals in 12 games, a 0.82 goals per game average. In both France and Italy, the leagues’ top scorers have the same average of 0.73 goals per game with Paris Saint-Germain’s Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Fiorentina’s Daniela Sabatino having both scored eight goals in 11 games.
Chelsea forward Kerr’s nine goals do not include any converted penalties. The goal tallies of Katoto and Schüller are also not boosted by penalty kicks while Putellas has scored once from the spot and Sabatino has scored two penalties.
Finally, Putellas comes out on top with hat-tricks with the Spaniard having scored two trebles. Kerr and Katoto have has scored one hat-trick each while Schüller and Sabatino have no hat-tricks so far this season.
Kerr is right up there as one of the greatest forwards in European football right now, if not the greatest, and with the player having netted a third of Chelsea’s league goals this season, she is crucial to her team’s title hopes.
