A Crowdfunder campaign set up to raise funds for Coventry United’s redundant players has already hit a sizeable four-figure sum.
The campaign was set up by local fundraiser and Coventry United fan Michael Mogan MBE whose children played in the club’s Under-10s age group. A fundraising target of £10,000 has been set and within the first 48 hours of the campaign’s lunch, the total currently stands at £2,353. Every penny raised will be donated to those made redundant by Coventry United just two days before Christmas.
After two-and-a-half seasons of the club playing elite football in the FA Women’s Championship, Coventry United’s board of directors informed players and staff of their intention to place The Red and Greens into voluntary liquidation on 23 December. The move has left at least 20 senior players and several staff out of work.
The announcement has dropped everyone involved with the club in limbo with staff and players now fighting to find new contracts with other clubs to remain in the game. Some will be able to sign professional deals with other clubs in the FA Women’s Championship but for many, they may need to work part-time further down the pyramid to stay in the game.
The Football Association are yet to release a statement on the situation, however, it is thought that Coventry United’s record in the FA Women’s Championship is likely to be expunged.
