‘Bring them on’ – Durham’s Holmes ready for second half of the season challenges

Durham defender Abby Holmes says that she is raring to go in the second half of the season and is ready for any challenge which awaits.

The Wildcats signed off 2021 with a hugely important 3-1 win against Blackburn Rovers at Maiden Castle in which Holmes scored twice. The result lifted Durham to within two points of FA Women’s Championship leaders Liverpool, although Lee Sanders’ side have now played a game more than The Reds.

Durham must travel to Liverpool and third-placed club London City Lionesses in the second half of the season but those tough games do not worry defender Holmes.

“It is so competitive in the Championship this season that anyone can take points off anyone,” Holmes told FAWSL Full-Time.

“I think that if we play our game and perform to our highest….bring them on.”

The Wildcats resume their season this weekend when they travel to The Dripping Pan to face an inconsistent Lewes side. While Holmes is aware of the two-point gap between Durham and the league’s summit, she says that the focus is only on the next game.

She said “You just have to take every game as it comes. We have to play them (Liverpool) again away but as I say, we just take every game as it comes.

“We are up there, we are two points behind so we will just keep playing our game and see what happens.”

Durham’s latest FA Women’s Championship fixture at Lewes kicks-off at midday on Sunday.
