Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that the FA Women’s Continental League Cup holds real value for the winners.
The Cityzens are the competition’s second most successful club and they qualified for this season’s final with a 3-0 semi-final victory over Tottenham Hotspur at The Academy Stadium this evening.
Commenting on what winning the trophy would mean to him and his players, Taylor said that the FA Women’s Continental League Cup is a trophy that should be celebrated as a major achievement.
“I’m really pleased (to reach the final),” Taylor told FAWSL Full-Time in the post-match press conference. “A trophy is a trophy to me and I’m pretty certain that if you asked the same question to Emma (Hayes) after she won the Continental Cup last season, she would say that it’s a trophy, it’s a trophy that you want to win, these trophies are important.
“The men’s game equivalent is something that Pep (Guardiola) and City have won for the last four years and it is a really important trophy to them.
“It is a really important thing for us, we have worked really hard to get here. The performance was good tonight but again, we don’t just want to be there in the final enjoying everything that goes with it, we want to win it. We understand the challenge that is ahead of us in terms of the opponent, it’s not easy, when you want to win a trophy like that nothing is easy.”
Manchester City were never in any danger of not reaching the final with semi-final opponents Spurs not really getting out of the blocks. Nevertheless, Taylor was still full of praise for his side’s efforts.
He said “I thought we set about the game really well, really aggressive with our pressing. We took 10 minutes to find our game plan but I thought the goal settled us down, it was a brilliant goal from Jess (Park).
“We scored some really good goals tonight, we arguably could have had more, but I am really delighted with the way that we controlled the game.”
The FA Women’s Continental League Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City takes place at The Cherry Red Records Stadium on Saturday 5 March 2022.
