‘Definitely a big game’ – Carter knows the importance of six-pointer for Birmingham City

Birmingham City interim head coach Darren Carter is not playing down the importance of this afternoon’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against relegation rivals Leicester City.

The pair meet at St Andrew’s in what promises to be a huge game in the fight for Barclays FA Women’s Super League survival.

The pressure is on Birmingham City to deliver with the Blues being two points adrift of Leicester City at the bottom of the table and interim head coach Carter is not avoiding the fact that this game is a monumental one.

“It’s definitely a big game,” Carter said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “It is plain to see that we are both in a precarious position and we need points. Yes, there are games after this one with plenty of points to pick up but this one will definitely factor into that from our standpoint.

“Looking back to the last game before Christmas, I think that we are in a completely different place now, we are a different team. We have obviously had more time on the training field, more games to develop and get better, as Leicester have as well. You’ll see a different type of game but we are at home, we are in good form at home and we need results so it’s a big one.”

Birmingham City stunned Arsenal in their last home league game while they held their nerve to see off second tier Sunderland after extra-time at St Andrew’s in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup last weekend. Carter went on to say that his side have shown real hard work and desire against their last two home opponents.

He said “The two games were different but I thought in the Arsenal game we worked fantastic from start to finish and our concentration levels were excellent. We didn’t make any mistakes and we got the fine details right across the 90 minutes, fantastic performance and thoroughly deserved the win.

“Again with Sunderland, I thought that we dominated the whole game. It was a classic cup tie, we had plenty of chances to put the game to bed, especially in that second half and all credit to their goalkeeper, she was fantastic on the day. One mistake at the other end proved costly and we went to extra-time but I loved the resilience and the fact that the energy levels kept getting higher throughout the game, the finishers who came on made a real impact.

“Two different wins but both equally as satisfying from my standpoint, especially last Sunday because it was a complete squad performance and those who came onto the pitch made a real impact.”

Birmingham City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Leicester City kicks-off at 2pm with tickets available on the day.
