Houghton absent as Wiegman names England squad for Arnold Clark Cup

Centre-back Steph Houghton is again a notable absentee from Sarina Wiegman’s latest England squad with the player having recently suffered a recurrence of her ankle injury.

Wiegman’s 24-player squad selection for the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup was announced this afternoon via an official press release by The Football Association.

Ellie Roebuck, Lucy Bronze and Leah Williamson all return to the squad after recovering from their respective injuries but this month’s camp comes too soon for Houghton who has recently returned to the treatment room with her ankle injury.

The latest England squad selection again has a familiar feel with head coach Wiegman keeping faith with the players who have served her so well in FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifying. There were some calls for a first call-up for Manchester City youngster Jess Park but she has not been included in the selection.

England begin their participation at the Arnold Clark Cup with a fixture against Canada in Middlesbrough on Thursday 17 February. They will then take on Spain in Norwich on Sunday 20 February before ending the tournament with a fixture against Germany in Wolverhampton on Wednesday 23 February.
