Ward focusing on the positives as Aston Villa prepare for Brighton test

Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward says that her side are focusing on the positives as they look to end a long run of home games without a win against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

The Villans have not registered a Barclays FA Women’s Super League victory on home soil since defeating Leicester City 2-1 on opening day. Ward’s side have now lost their last six home league fixtures after going down 1-0 to Everton in midweek

When speaking ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion at The Banks’s Stadium, Ward admitted that her side are due some luck at home whilst commenting that the squad are remaining positive.

“We need a bit of luck don’t we,” Ward said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time. “I always hear the saying ‘swings and roundabouts’ with decisions, with your luck in-front of goal and you keep hoping and praying that the luck will change because we deserve to be in a better position as we have played some unbelievable football recently.

“Nobody could quite work out how we lost the game (against Everton) but we have got to keep using the positives and we’ve got to keep building. We are in a great place, even though we feel that we should have more points on the board. We are taking massive strides and showing huge improvements all of the time and that’s massively important. We’ve got to keep going.”

Brighton & Hove Albion ended a long winless run with victory over Reading last time out. Despite The Seagulls’ inconsistent form over the course of the last three months, Ward said that the Sussex club have done an amazing job with their development in the top flight.

She said “Brighton have done an unbelievable job in recent years, let’s forget the last few weeks, how they have built themselves into a very good FAWSL side has been exceptional. It is something that I talk to our board about because they’ve done very well with how they’ve progressed their women’s section. “It just shows you that you’ve got to keep digging in, you want to have bumps in the road, that’s normal. The funny thing is that with our bumps in the road right now, we are playing really well. That’s the frustrating part, it’s not like we are not playing well or creating chances because we are playing extremely well and creating lots of chances, we’ve just got to find the back of the net.”

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion kicks-off at 11.30am on Saturday morning.
