Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz will not be available for selection for the remainder of the season with the player having announced the news that she is pregnant.
The German international is understood to have revealed her personal news to club staff and her teammates earlier this week.
FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official press release from Chelsea FC earlier this afternoon.
Chelsea recently reported that Leupolz was sidelined with long COVID. She has not been seen in a Chelsea shirt since the club exited the UEFA Women’s Champions League in Wolfsburg in December. While the club reported that Leupolz has not been fit enough to play due to illness, it has now been revealed that there are happier reasons behind her absence.
Leupolz will continue to train with Chelsea in the coming weeks but she will be stepping down to a lighter training programme tailored to her pregnancy. The club have not confirmed when the player is expected to give birth.
The midfielder joined Chelsea from Bayern Munich in summer 2020. Leupolz has gone on to make 26 appearances for the club in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, scoring five goals in the process.
