Tottenham Hotspur head coach Rehanne Skinner says that her side know that they will be the underdogs when they take on Manchester City at The Hive this afternoon.
Spurs are currently sitting in fourth place in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table, one place and five points above Manchester City. The Lilywhites are also unbeaten at home in the league so far this season.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Skinner said that Spurs see themselves as underdogs against Manchester City despite holding the higher position in the league table.
“They are always formidable, they are an experienced team with lots of senior internationals with a significant number of caps under their belts,” Skinner said. “Ultimately, we go into the game knowing that we are the underdogs within it and that’s absolutely fine, it is something that the players have actually stood up to over the course of the season.
“I think they are in good form but so are we and it is 11 v 11 at the end of the day, we have just got to make sure that we do our jobs as well as we can to make life as difficult as possible for them.”
Spurs have four more games to negotiate their way through at home to remain unbeaten for the season. Skinner said that going the full campaign without tasting a home loss would create another piece of history for the club.
She said “Over the course of the season, we have chipped away at lots of little moments that have created some history within the club and if we are in a position to do that (remain unbeaten) at the end of the season then that’s a fantastic achievement.
“We are really pleased with where we are and the progress that we have made, there have been significant changes over the course of this season. I said at the start that we are on a journey to build the club to be more competitive at the top end of the table year-on-year so this is still a step in the right direction regardless of whether we do achieve that or not.
“It is certainly something that we would like to say at the end of the season that we were able to do it.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester City kicks-off at 12.30pm this afternoon.
