Manchester City looking forward to challenge of breaking down Spurs – Taylor

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that the challenge of breaking down a stubborn and well-organised Tottenham Hotspur defence is one that his side are looking forward to.

The Cityzens travel to The Hive to take on Spurs in their latest Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture this afternoon. The hosts are unbeaten at home in the league all season while Rehanne Skinner’s side have also kept three consecutive clean sheets.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Taylor said that his side are looking forward to the challenge of breaking down Spurs.

“They make it difficult,” Taylor said. “They are a team that either comes out and really engages in their press from goal kicks or they really sit off and make it really difficult for you to get through.

“We have to be ready for both of those phases of play and we understand that it is down to us to find the spaces, it is down to us to move the opposition in a manner that is going to enable us to progress in certain areas.

“They’ve been quite frugal in what they have done defensively so we understand the challenge that’s ahead of us and again, it is a good challenge and one that we look forward to.”

Manchester City have scored seven goals in their last two away games in all competitions and Taylor said that this has given the team huge confidence.

He said “It has given us real belief. I think scoring goals is a massive part of us in terms of what we need to do to be effective. When we have not been successful, it has usually been because we have not been effective at the top end of the pitch.

“That Tottenham game at the beginning of the season is one that you look at when you look at the possession and the opportunities that we created that we should have been out of sight by half-time. If you don’t take your chances and your opportunities, you always leave the back door open for the opposition to get success against you.

“They’ve got an impressive home record, we have got an impressive away record so it all adds up to being a decent game. Again, we will be doing our best to try and be successful.”

Manchester City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur kicks-off at 12.30pm.
