Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion has again suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury according to reports on The Red Devils’ official website.
The 26-year-old centre-back first suffered an ACL injury with former club Manchester City back in 2019 and while she has bounced back to both form and fitness with new club Manchester United this season, the player has now sadly sustained the same injury.
Manchester United have confirmed that Mannion has already undergone surgery on her injury. The player is now likely to be in rehabilitation for the majority of the remainder of 2022.
Mannion joined Manchester United in the summer after leaving Manchester City. The player has gone on to make 19 appearances for The Red Devils in all competitions, cementing her place at the heart of the Manchester United defence. Mannion’s final appearance prior to her injury came as her side exited the FA Women’s Continental League Cup with a 3-1 semi-final defeat at Chelsea last month.
Manchester United will now need to complete their battle for a first-ever European qualification without Mannion’s services. The Red Devils currently occupy third position in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table, however, fourth-placed Manchester City are just three points adrift with a game in-hand.
