Manchester City boss Taylor expects Everton ‘to have a right good go’ in FA Cup quarter-final

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that latest opponents Everton will give this afternoon’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie absolutely everything.

The two sides meet at The Academy Stadium in what is a re-run of the 2019/2020 final. The pair have already met twice this season in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup with Manchester City winning both games by four-goal margins.

With Everton in ninth position in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table, it could be argued that Vitality Women’s FA Cup progression could save their season. When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of the tie, Manchester City boss Taylor said that he expects Everton to have a real go against his side this afternoon.

“It’s a one-off game, it’s winner takes all,” Taylor said. “We are expecting Everton to have a right good go at it, it is an opportunity for them.

“For ourselves, we have to control the opposition threats and we are aware of that. We need to fully impose ourselves on the game as early as we can and I think that we have done that fairly well in the games recently.

“Again, it is a one-off game where the winner goes through to the semi-finals of a great competition so it’s an exciting tie.”

Taylor went on to discuss the aim of his side imposing themselves on the game further. The Manchester City boss said that he is keen to see his side make their mark earlier on in games.

He said “We’ve been capitalising a lot in the second half of games for the last four or five. We are trying our very best to finish off the actions, there were 18 shots on target the other night (against Reading) but it took until the final quarter of the game before we scored.

“It was a really dominant performance and one where we really deserved the three points. I felt that we continued to be patient in the game, controlled build-up and it was a case of just polishing off the finishes which we did thankfully in the end.”

Manchester City’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final against Everton kicks-off at 12.30pm this afternoon. Tickets will remain on-sale right up until kick-off.
