Arsenal resume their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign on Wednesday evening when German club VfL Wolfsburg are the visitors to the Emirates Stadium for a quarter-final first leg tie.
The Gunners battled their way through the group stage and they now face a stern test from the 2013 and 2014 UEFA Women’s Champions League winners.
Ahead of Arsenal’s quarter-final first leg tie, FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the UEFA statistics surrounding the fixture. Here are four facts which relate to The Gunners’ meeting with VfL Wolfsburg at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal have a poor record against German opposition
Arsenal have won only three of their 12 UEFA Women’s Champions League matches against German clubs (D1 L8). The Gunners defeated TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 4-0 at home in this season’s group stage but they lost the away fixture 4-1 as they qualified for the quarter-finals with a whimper.
History suggests that keeping it tight will be tough
Arsenal are set to contest their 14th UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final. The Gunners have failed to keep a clean sheet in all 12 of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals staged on home soil. Their 2019/2020 quarter-final tie was staged on neutral territory as a one-off game as Europe battled against the Coronavirus pandemic.
VfL Wolfsburg have been dominant against England’s elite
VfL Wolfsburg have lost only two of their 12 European matches against English clubs (W8 D2) and have failed to score in just one of those 12 games. Both of those defeats came in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League as the German club suffered back-to-back defeats to Chelsea.
The She-Wolves can equal Arsenal’s win tally
VfL Wolfsburg have the third-highest number of UEFA Women’s Champions League wins (55). The She-Wolves can equal Arsenal’s tally of 56 competition wins with victory at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening. Only French club Lyon (94) have won more UEFA Women’s Champions League matches than VfL Wolfsburg and Arsenal.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg tie between Arsenal and VfL Wolfsburg kicks-off at 8pm on Wednesday evening.
