Everton defender George receives surprise England recall

Everton defender Gabby George has been handed a surprise recall to the England senior squad following injuries to Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood and Arsenal’s Lotte Wubben-Moy.

The Football Association announced the news this morning via an official press release. George has left the Under-23s camp to link-up with the senior squad ahead of tomorrow night’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifier against North Macedonia in Skopje.

George has previously been capped twice at senior level for the Lionesses, both of those appearances came back in 2018. Her last outing came in a 3-0 international friendly win against Austria in November that year. The player has since battled back from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury to impress at club level with Everton.

It has been reported that Manchester City defender Greenwood has been sidelined with an ongoing knee problem while Arsenal’s Wubben-Moy has a thigh injury. Both of those players have returned to their respective clubs for treatment. England also lost Chelsea pair Niamh Charles and Beth England to COVID-19 earlier this week while captain Leah Williamson will miss the North Macedonia match due to concussion protocols.

England’s latest FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifier against North Macedonia kicks-off at 7pm tomorrow night.
