London City Lionesses head coach Melissa Phillips has indicated that her side have a score to settle when they face Lewes at Princes Park this evening.
The Pride lost the reverse fixture 1-0 at The Dripping Pan in September. The performance that day was not up to the team’s usual standards with London City Lionesses spurning some good chances to score.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of the latest meeting in Dartford this evening, London City Lionesses boss Phillips indicated that her side will be aiming to show what they can do after failing to impress in the reverse fixture at the start of the season.
“Lewes are a gritty opponent,” Phillips said. “That game was really transitional when we played them back in September, they scored an early goal after a big chance of our own and we had our fair share of opportunities but we didn’t put them in the back of the net.
“I don’t think we were at our best by any means due to COVID, coming off an international break and we had a few niggles. We weren’t at our best on the day but we are looking forward to having that game back at home. We want the opportunity to go and prove ourselves just like we did against Charlton in the last game.
“We have to match and emulate the grit and the work ethic shown against Charlton coming into Lewes. They have some potent attacking threats in their front line that we are going to have to manage but we have to ensure that we put away our own opportunities.”
London City Lionesses have just three games left this season and Phillips went on to say that her side are targeting a second-place finish.
She said “The goal is three points in every match in the remaining games. We are still hungry to finish as high as we can in the table, we have put ourselves in that hat (to finish second) and that’s exactly what we are working towards. We don’t talk about winning a lot, we talk about the performance, the process and what we need to do to get there and we are certainly focused on that.
“It has been a very good week in training, there’s a really good energy in the group, a really good focus and I think it’ll be about that determination to finish the season strong.”
London City Lionesses’ FA Women’s Championship fixture against Lewes at Princes Park kicks-off at 7pm.
