Manchester City full-back Bronze joins FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona have today announced the acquisition of England international full-back Lucy Bronze following the expiration of her contract with Manchester City.

There had been much speculation regarding the next destination of Bronze, seen by many as one of, if not the best player in the world. The most likely move appeared to be to the NWSL in America, however, Barcelona have swooped in to secure her signature.

With the Spanish side narrowly missing out on retaining their UEFA Women’s Champions League title this season, head coach Jonatan Girรกldez is clearly looking to strengthen his squad so that the club can win Europeโ€™s top prize once again. Bronzeโ€™s arrival is a clear statement of intent from the club and also poses a new challenge for the Lioness.

Bronze has signed a two-year contract that will keep her in Spain until the end of the 2023/2024 season. She is no stranger to playing abroad having already spent three seasons in France with Lyon, the side which beat Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final last month. Bronze won the UEFA Women’s Champions League three times herself during her stint in France with Les Fenottes and that kind of experience and European pedigree could be exactly the edge that her new club need to become top dogs in Europe once again.

The Spanish champions had been strongly linked with a move for Manchester United right-back Ona Batlle. Today’s news may put to bed any rumours of the young Spanish starlet moving away from the Leigh Sports Village, at least for the time being. However, given the pulling power of the Catalan giants and the need for strength-in-depth in the roster, a move for Batlle could still be on the cards.

For Bronze, her main focus now is a home EUROs as she looks to win one of the few trophies that has thus far eluded her. Beyond that, given Barcelonaโ€™s dominance in the Primera Iberdrola, there will almost certainly be much more silverware on the horizon.
