Thigh strain temporarily rules Arsenal’s Wälti out of international duty with Switzerland

Arsenal midfielder Lia Wälti will not be in action for Switzerland on Friday with the player currently nursing a muscle strain in her right thigh.

The Swiss are set to face Germany in an international friendly in Erfurt as part of their preparations for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022.

The Swiss Football Association provided a squad update via their official website earlier today confirming that captain Wälti has left camp due to a muscle strain. The Arsenal midfielder will not travel with the Swiss squad to Germany on Friday and she will remain in her homeland in a bid to complete a swift recovery. With the start of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 now just a fortnight away, the Swiss medical staff are taking no risks with the fitness of their leader, although Wälti should return to camp next week.

Switzerland return to competitive action for the first time since April when they take on Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s Germany on Friday. The nation are bidding for a first win of 2022 with Switzerland having recorded two draws and two defeats so far in the calendar year.

Following the Germany game, Switzerland will play one final warm-up fixture against the Lionesses in Zürich next Thursday before travelling to England for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 finals.
