England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that her team are full of energy and excitement and are ready to get the home UEFA Women’s EURO underway.
The Lionesses face Austria in the tournament’s opening match in front of a sell-out crowd at Old Trafford tomorrow night.
Given the fact that up to 74,000 fans will be cheering on England at ‘The Theatre of Dreams’, the Lionesses squad could be forgiven for feeling one or two nerves, however, head coach Wiegman says that the team are raring to go.
“We are just really ready to go,” Wiegman said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “The real preparations for the EUROs started on May 30th and we have just worked from week-to-week and training match-to-training match.
“After the Switzerland game, we came back and had a little time off and then we started training to get ready for tomorrow. You can feel that everyone is just really ready and we just want to go.”
Austria have grown since ending the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 as surprise semi-finalists. Wiegman went on to say that she is expecting a tough game but one which England can and should control.
“You never know (what to expect),” Wiegman said. “Austria are a very strong team, their togetherness is very good, they are tough and very physical.
“They were a very organised team when we played them in November and I think they still have been recently. I expect a tough game but if we play our best game, I expect that we will be on the ball more than they will and we can dominate the game.”
The opening match of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 between England and Austria kicks-off at 8pm tomorrow night.
