Aston Villa striker Simone Magill will play no further part in this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO after sustaining a serious knee injury in Northern Ireland’s 4-1 defeat to Norway in Southampton last night.
Magill sustained the injury in the final 15 minutes of the match at St Mary’s Stadium. The player left the field distraught as she was replaced by Caitlin McGuinness
The Irish FA have this afternoon provided an injury update which has confirmed that Magill will play no further part in the UEFA Women’s EURO. The player will undergo a scan on her knee this afternoon to determine the full extent of the injury.
The news is not only a huge blow to Northern Ireland and the player, it is also a potential concern for Magill’s club Aston Villa. The 27-year-old only joined The Villans at the start of the week and she was looking forward to a new challenge with the Midlands club. Magill’s injury now casts real doubt over whether she will be fit for the start of the new domestic season.
The signing of Magill seemed like the missing piece of the jigsaw for Aston Villa boss Carla Ward who has long been searching for a new forward to bolster her attacking options. Depending upon the outcome of this afternoon’s scan, Ward may need to have a contingency plan in attack for the start of the new season.
