Southampton will begin life in the Barclays Women’s Championship with a home fixture against Charlton Athletic.
The 2022/2023 Barclays Women’s Championship fixtures were released this morning with a number of mouth-watering matches being thrown up. The season is set to begin on the weekend of 20/21 August 2022.
Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s Southampton side were promoted to the Barclays Women’s Championship in May after winning the FA Women’s National League Championship Play-Off. The Saints will face a full-time Charlton Athletic side in their first match in the elite game, a significant test for the Hampshire side.
Elsewhere, Durham and Sunderland will contest a passionate North East derby at Maiden Castle while promotion-chasing pair London City Lionesses and Crystal Palace will meet at Princes Park. Birmingham City will launch their promotion bid at St Andrew’s as they take on Lewes, a side managed by their former boss Scott Booth, while Bristol City travel to part-time side Coventry United. The one remaining fixture sees Blackburn Rovers host Sheffield United.
Following the release of the fixture list, Kelly Simmons, Director of the Women’s Professional Game, said “The Barclays Women’s Championship continues to go from strength-to-strength and this season is likely to be the biggest ever off the back of the UEFA Women’s EURO.
“What makes the Women’s Championship so special is how competitive it is, with every team capable of beating each other, and I have no doubt that promotion and relegation will go right down to the wire.
“I’m delighted to welcome Barclays on our journey with the league, as we look to make the Women’s Championship even stronger moving forward.”
