England goalkeeper Hampton tests positive for COVID-19

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has tested positive for COVID-19.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via a squad update from The Football Association this morning. Hampton will be monitored regularly with a view to returning to the squad as soon as possible

Hampton’s positive test comes off the back of the news that England head coach Sarina Wiegman is in self-isolation after testing positive for the virus. Wiegman’s positive test was recorded on Friday which resulted in her missing England’s 5-0 victory over Northern Ireland in Southampton. At this stage, it is unknown whether Wiegman will return to the dugout for the Lionesses’ UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 quarter-final tie against Spain in Brighton tomorrow night.

England will be missing goalkeeper Hampton for the Spain game, although there is a chance that the player will be available for selection should the Lionesses reach the semi-finals with those ties still a week away. Wiegman’s side are set to take on Spain with Mary Earps and Ellie Roebuck as their fit goalkeepers.

In addition to Wiegman and Hampton’s positive COVID-19 tests, defender Lotte Wubben-Moy has also had the virus during the tournament. Alex Greenwood and Ellen White both tested positive in pre-camp and spent time away from the group.
