Maltese international midfielder Farrugia joins Durham

Durham have completed the signing of Maltese international midfielder Maria Farrugia on a free transfer.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from Durham this afternoon. Farrugia joins The Wildcats after leaving their North East neighbours Sunderland earlier this summer.

Farrugia impressed with her former club in the Barclays Women’s Championship last season. The player made 18 league appearances for Sunderland in which she scored one goal.

On the international stage, the midfielder has been capped by Malta on 25 occasions at senior level.

After completing her move to Maiden Castle, Farrugia said “I’m delighted to have signed with Durham. It’s a new team, a new challenge and I’m very excited for that. Hopefully, it will be a good season for the team.

“Getting to play full-time football was one of the main things that made me want to be here. It was always one of my dreams so I’m very grateful for that.

“Durham are one of the strongest teams in the league so to be here is really great.”

Farrugia becomes Durham boss Lee Sanders’ fourth signing of the summer transfer window following the recent additions of Georgia Robert, Tatiana Saunders and Jess Clarke.
