Blackburn Rovers announce signing of goalkeeper Salgado

Blackburn Rovers have completed the signing of goalkeeper Shanell Salgado on a free transfer according to reports on the Lancashire club’s official website.

The 28-year-old German keeper joins Rovers after most recently turning out for their Barclays Women’s Championship rivals Lewes. Salgado left The Dripping Pan during the close season after just one year with The Rookettes.

In her time with the Sussex club, Salgado largely played a role as understudy to first-choice goalkeeper Tatiana Saunders. Salgado made six appearances for Lewes in the Barclays Women’s Championship, keeping a clean sheet in the club’s 2-0 victory over Watford in Kings Langley in February.

Salgado brings plenty of second tier experience with her to The Sir Tom Finney Stadium. In addition to her spell at Lewes, the keeper has also spent time with Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic. It was with the former which Salgado impressed the most. She enjoyed a run a games with Crystal Palace and gained plenty of credit for her performances. A long term injury then halted her progress in the English game.

The keeper is Blackburn Rovers boss Gemma Donnelly’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window. The player could go straight into the squad for the trip to Bristol City on Sunday.
