Arsenal to face Ajax in UEFA Women’s Champions League’s second round

Arsenal will face Dutch club AFC Ajax in Round 2 of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The Round 2 draw took place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland this lunchtime and was broadcast live on UEFA platforms.

The Round 2 draw was split into two paths: the Champions Path (with 14 teams competing for seven group places) and the League Path (with ten teams competing for five group places). The 15 survivors from Round 1 were joined in the Round 2 draw by nine clubs entering the competition at the second stage.

As last season’s Barclays Women’s Super League runners-up, Jonas Eidevall’s Arsenal side enter this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League at the Round 2 stage. The Gunners were the third highest-ranked side of the five seeds in the League Path draw based on UEFA club coefficient ranking.

The draw determined that The Gunners will face Dutch Pure Energie Eredivisie Vrouwen club AFC Ajax over two legs. Arsenal were drawn first therefore they will play at home before travelling to The Netherlands for the second leg. The first leg ties are scheduled to take place on 20/21 September with the second leg ties following a week later.

The winners of the 12 Round 2 ties will join Barclays Women’s Super League champions Chelsea, European champions Lyon, Spanish giants FC Barcelona and German club VfL Wolfsburg in the group stage.

This season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League final takes place at the PSV Stadion in Eindhoven, The Netherlands on either 3 or 4 June 2023.
