Crystal Palace forward Molly Sharpe says that the team need the fans to come out and support them at Selhurst Park later this month.
The Eagles return to SE25 for the first time this season when they take on Southampton on Sunday 18 September (kick-off 12.30pm).
Crystal Palace are pushing for promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League this season after winning both of their opening two matches. The game against a full-time professional Southampton side at Selhurst Park promises to be a big occasion but Crystal Palace really do need their fans to rally round and go along to support them.
“We can’t do it without the fans,” forward Sharpe said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time this week. “Every time we have lots of fans there, we do well, a big backing always makes us perform better.
“We just want everybody to come and watch us. Even if you are not into women’s football, come and have a look and I promise you that you will enjoy it.”
Sharpe went on to say that the team are excited to play at The Eagles’ spiritual home while the move is a great gesture of support by the club to their women’s team.
She said “Everyone is just really excited. There are a couple of Palace fans in the team who are absolutely buzzing with it being at Selhurst. It’s such an amazing ground, the changing rooms are amazing and it really just makes us feel part of the club which is ultimately what we want.
“Credit to the men for giving us the opportunity to play on the pitch. I think it’s such a big event that it’d just be amazing if we could get a big crowd to watch us and hopefully, get the three points from Southampton.”
Like Crystal Palace, opponents Southampton have invested heavily in their women’s team. With so many talented professional footballers set to grace the turf at Selhurst Park, it promises to be an excellent game for fans of both clubs along with neutrals who have a general interest in football.
“Southampton’s not a million miles away so they will bring fans,” Sharpe said. “Some of the teams in the league are getting some amazing backing from the men’s clubs and that’s what we want. We want to be treated as professional clubs so it is amazing that we are getting these opportunities.
“With Southampton coming up, they’ve signed some good players so I think it’ll be a great game, it’ll be exciting to watch. The club have done an excellent job in picking such a great game to put on at Selhurst Park.”
