London City Lionesses focused on executing winning formula says Phillips

London City Lionesses head coach Melissa Phillips says that her side are focused on executing their winning formula in the next run of games.

The Pride resume the Barclays Women’s Championship season with a fixture at Lewes on Sunday. The trip to The Dripping Pan begins a five-match sequence of fixtures which London City Lionesses will see as games in which they can collect a high number of points.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in the pre-match press conference, London City Lionesses boss Phillips agreed that the run of fixtures offer her side a great opportunity to progress and the focus is upon consistently implementing their winning formula.

“We looked at our first five matches and they’re all big games,” Phillips said. “It is a significant chunk of the season in those five matches and it can position you in the table.

“We took some time in the international window to look at what behaviours and qualities are required from us as a team to go out and get the three points in each of the next matches. We have got what we feel is our winning formula and it is just about staying focused on that and executing it game in and game out.

“We are looking forward to the challenge that Lewes and then Durham will present. We will manage these next two league games and then we will look at the four-match stint in the next window. Each game counts and each set of three points are what we are going after.”

Lewes are under new management this season after Scott Booth was appointed as their head coach in the summer. Phillips went on to say that The Rookettes have retained some of their old traits whilst also adapting to one or two new methods.

She said “Lewes are always an athletic side and The Dripping Pan is not an easy place to go and play. They are always a physical, scrappy side to go and play against. We have found that the games have been quite transitional.

“Watching their game against Southampton, it was a game of two halves, it was 2-0 in Lewes’ favour and then 2-2 to finish the game. It was a little bit transitional in that second half but I think they’ve definitely got some quality and they are trying to play a little more expansive which offers different threats but also opens up different areas for us to exploit. We know that we will have to go there and focus on our performance.

“Despite not playing (last week), we are eager and chomping at the bit to go out there and play. We’ve had an opportunity to focus on ourselves and what we have learnt from the first two matches so we are sharp going into the weekend.”

London City Lionesses’ latest Barclays Women’s Championship fixture against Lewes kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
