Barclays Women’s Championship club Southampton could set a new attendance record for an FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup group stage fixture when they welcome top tier side Tottenham Hotspur to St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.
The Saints have teamed up with new official club partner Starling Bank to offer free tickets for the Spurs game to their fans. It has today been revealed that more than 7,000 have been snapped up, a total which is thought to be significantly greater than any attendance ever recorded for a fixture in the group stage of the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup. Should 7,000 fans use their free tickets and attend the game, the crowd will also be higher than those recorded for 10 of the 11 FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup finals.
The all-time record attendance for an FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup match was recorded for last season’s final. Manchester City defeated 3-1 Chelsea in-front of 8,004 fans at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium.
Having risen up the footballing pyramid in recent years, Southampton have made lots of new history. There is still time for fans to snap up tickets for this weekend’s landmark fixture against Barclays Women’s Super League giants Tottenham Hotspur and help increase the potential record attendance figure even more.
