Quality of finishing impresses Skinner in Manchester United’s huge victory in Malta

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner admitted that he was delighted with the quality of finishing in his side’s 10-0 victory over Maltese club Birkirkara FC in Paola last night.

Vilde Bøe Risa and Alessia Russo both netted braces in the match while Lucía García, Grace Clinton, Jade Moore, Nikita Parris, Rachel Williams and Martha Thomas were also on target as The Red Devils eased to victory over the Maltese champions.

When speaking to Manchester United’s official media team after the match, Skinner said that he saw progression from his side in terms of their performance.

“It was a great game. It was difficult because Birkirkara used a deep block formation,” Skinner said.

“What we have shown from our perspective is that we have evolved from last year, we have tried to overcome a deeper block.

“For me, it is more about the occasion and coming to be part of our wonderful supporters in Malta. Having the oldest supporters’ club for Manchester United in history, it was important for us to come and be a part of that.

“Overall, it was a fantastic night. There’s lots to learn for them and hopefully, lots to learn for us.”

Manchester United netted some impressive goals against Birkirkara and Skinner went on to say that the quality of finishing was the biggest positive to come out of the game.

He said “The types of goals that we scored was the most pleasing thing. Lucía’s (García) goal is just mesmerising, the intent, the purpose behind that. I hope to see a lot more from her going into the second half of the season because she’s a wonderful talent.

“Even in the second half, the headers, to finish them off right at the end, putting them in places that the keeper can’t reach….for us, there were a lot of great quality finishes, moments that we can still improve, but it was a good way to blow the cobwebs out before we go into the game next week.”

Manchester United resume their Barclays Women’s Super League campaign with a home fixture against Liverpool on Sunday 15 January 2023.
