Aston Villa complete the signing of Manchester United’s attacking midfielder Staniforth

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Manchester United’s attacking midfielder Lucy Staniforth on a free transfer.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the deal via an official club press release from Aston Villa this morning. Staniforth moves to The Poundland Bescot Stadium following the termination of her contract at former club Manchester United while she has signed an initial 18-month deal with The Villans.

Staniforth has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons with Manchester United. The player has made 30 appearances for The Red Devils in the Barclays Women’s Super League while she has scored two goals. She scored against new club Aston Villa in a 5-0 victory for Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village last season.

The attacking midfielder has struggled for game time at Manchester United this season and she will now be hoping to make a real impact at her new club.

After securing the services of Staniforth, Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward said “Lucy is someone who will bring a huge amount of experience to this squad.

“She’s a winner and is someone who can play off both sides as well as centrally. We’re delighted to have her at Aston Villa.”

Staniforth becomes Aston Villa boss Ward’s second January transfer window signing following the recent addition of Jordan Nobbs from Arsenal.
