Southampton complete the signing of goalkeeper Howard

Southampton have completed the signing of highly-rated goalkeeper Beth Howard.

The Saints confirmed the transfer via a squad update on their official club website this afternoon.

Howard joins Southampton from FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division club Bridgwater United. The 27-year-old has made 11 appearances for the Somerset club in all competitions this season. Howard recorded a hugely impressive 15 clean sheets for Bridgwater United last season while she played in both games against new club Southampton.

The signing of Howard will add further competition for the Southampton goalkeeping jersey. Kayla Rendell currently holds the number one jersey while Sophie Harris is also a member of the club’s goalkeeping union.

After completing her move to Southampton, Howard said “It’s unbelievable, really. There aren’t any words to explain it.

“When you’re growing up, it’s hard because there aren’t those role models of what it looks like to be a female professional footballer.

“But then here, it’s literally Premier League standard; That changed my perspective and made me realise I could have the opportunity. You can’t say no to that.”

Howard could go straight into the Southampton matchday squad for this weekend’s Barclays Women’s Championship fixture against Lewes at St Mary’s Stadium.
