Durham and Southampton played out a goalless draw at Maiden Castle in the Barclays Women’s Championship this afternoon.
In bitterly cold conditions in the North East, both sides cancelled each other out in a game which produced very few goalscoring opportunities.
The first half was a scrappy affair which lacked quality in the final third from both sides. Durham arguably had the better opportunities, although neither goalkeeper was severely tested. Sarah Robson saw a header go narrowly wide of the far post after connecting with a corner kick delivery before Mollie Lambert curled a shot off target later in the half.
After a quiet start to the second half, Durham went close to breaking the deadlock twice in quick succession. First, Southampton keeper Kayla Rendell had to be alert to block a Lambert shot. Saoirse Noonan then beat Rendell to the ball but Southampton were able to clear their lines.
The Saints eventually warmed to the task and a cross caused chaos in the Durham six yard box but Katie Wilkinson was unable to force the ball home. Ella Morris then took on a shot from 20 yards but the ball fizzed wide.
Both sides made changes late on in the game in a bid to find a winning goal but the contest remained goalless as Durham and Southampton simply couldn’t be separated.
Neither side will be overly pleased with the point earned from today’s game with Durham looking to climb the Barclays Women’s Championship table and Southampton aiming to maintain a promotion push.
