Tottenham Hotspur soar past London City Lionesses to reach FA Cup fifth round

Tottenham Hotspur eased their way past Barclays Women’s Championship table-toppers London City Lionesses to advance to the Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round with a convincing 5-0 win at The Breyer Group Stadium this afternoon.

Four different players got their names on the scoresheet for The Lilywhites while there was also an own goal from London City Lionesses defender Harley Bennett.

The visitors piled on some early pressure, showing their intent not to give Spurs an easy time, however, it was the North Londoners who went close to breaking the deadlock, new signing Beth England narrowly missing the back of the net.

Rosella Ayane was then allowed far too much space and she set the ball on a plate for England who guided her effort beyond visiting keeper Shae Yanez with her head to open the scoring for Spurs.

London City Lionesses kept a tight backline but they were struggling going forward. Karin Muya was effective out wide but there was no real attacking outlet for The Pride.

Bringing some magic for Spurs, Mana Iwabuchi slipped the ball past the opposition defence before doubling the her side’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Minutes into the second half, a sloppy piece of goalkeeping by Yanez allowed Drew Spence to tap the ball home, increasing The Lilywhites’ lead to three. Spurs were then handed a fourth goal when London City Lionesses skipper Bennett attempted to cut off a cross but only succeeded in looping the ball over Yanez’s head and into her own net.

The Barclays Women’s Super League side would end the game 5-0 victors. In an attempt to play out from the back, a deflated London City Lionesses side lost possession, allowing substitute Eveliina Summanen to add her name to the scoresheet. It was a goal that summed up a disappointing afternoon for The Pride.

Tottenham Hotspur will now look ahead to the Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round draw while London City Lionesses must regroup and turn their attentions back towards winning promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League.
