Sunderland have completed the signing of Durham goalkeeper Megan Borthwick.
The Lady Black Cats confirmed the news via an update on their official club website this evening.
The 25-year-old joins Sunderland after spending seven years with Durham. Borthwick held the number one goalkeeping position at her former side for a long period prior to the club adopting full-time professional status. Borthwick has deputised on the Durham bench on a handful of occasions this season while she has also turned out for their partner club, Durham Cestria.
After completing her move to Sunderland, Borthwick said “I’m so happy to be here. I think it’s a club that’s growing and I’m ready to be a part of that so I’m ready to get going.
“I had a conversation with Mel (Reay) and Steph (Libbey) and what they said was really positive and something that I wanted to be on board with. I think coming in to speak to them, I wanted to get going straight away.
“I’ve had 10 years’ experience in the women’s game and I think I’ve grown and adapted to it. I’ve obviously had quite a lot of experience in the Championship that I think that I can add to this club.
“I’m really looking forward to working with the squad, they seem like a lovely group of girls and they’ve been very welcoming so I’m looking forward to getting going.”
Borthwick will challenge Claudia Moan and Alli Cowling for the first-choice goalkeeping jersey at new club Sunderland.
