Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Nobbs has been called into the England squad in place of the injured Fran Kirby.
FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an England squad update from The Football Association this evening.
Nobbs was one of a handful of surprise omissions from England head coach Sarina Wiegman’s initial 26-player squad selection for this month’s Arnold Clark Cup. The midfielder’s chances of a call-up had seemed more likely given the fact that she is now getting regular game time at new club Aston Villa.
Chelsea midfielder Kirby was selected for England duty, however, she has had to withdraw from the squad after sustaining a knee injury in her side’s 7-0 FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup semi-final victory over West Ham United at The Chigwell Construction Stadium on Thursday evening. England boss Wiegman has turned to Nobbs to fill the void left by Kirby’s withdrawal.
Nobbs has lots of experience on the international stage with the player having been capped for England on 70 occasions at senior level. She was a member of the Lionesses team which won the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup 12 months ago and she will now have the opportunity to help defend the trophy.
England begin their participation at the 2023 Arnold Clark Cup with a fixture against South Korea in Milton Keynes on Thursday evening.
