Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eveliina Summanen has received a two-match ban for the role which she played in the red card issued to Manchester United’s Ella Toone in the recent fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Football Association announced the news via their official spokesperson this afternoon.
Summanen was fouled by Toone during Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Spurs in North London on Sunday 12 February. The two players then clashed on the floor with Toone raising her hands to Summanen. The Spurs player claimed that contact had been made with her face but this was proved to not be the case. The incident resulted in Toone being sent-off for violent conduct, however, Manchester United have since won an appeal against the decision.
Summanen was issued with an FA charge following the incident but the decision has now been made to hand the player a further punishment in the form of a two-match ban for ‘successful deception of a match official’.
A statement from The Football Association read “Tottenham Hotspur Women’s Evelina Summanen has been suspended for two
matches following their WSL match on Sunday 12 February against Manchester United Women.
“The midfielder denied a charge for ‘successful deception of a match official’, which allegedly took place during the 80th minute and led to an opponent being sent off, and amounts to improper conduct. An independent Regulatory Commission upheld the charge during a subsequent hearing and imposed her two-match ban. Its written reasons will be published in due course.”
It is thought that Summanen will be suspended for her side’s next two fixtures at home to Reading and away at Manchester City.
