Leicester City head coach Willie Kirk says that this weekend’s fixture at Manchester United is a free-hit and that any points collected will be bonus points in the battle for Barclays Women’s Super League survival.
The Foxes travel to the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday for their latest challenge in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
Leicester City closed the gap between themselves and survival to just one point prior to the international break. The Foxes are making good progress with head coach Kirk’s survival plan and he very much sees this weekend’s game as a free-hit.
“They’re a top team like any other team in the top four,” Kirk said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “It is top versus bottom in terms of the league table and we’ve got absolutely no right to take anything from the game, so I feel like it is a free-hit. There’s no pressure on us because internally, we’ve done what we wanted to do in those four games (the last block).
“The pressure is on United; like all the teams in the top four, any dropped points could cost them at the end of the season. Hopefully, we will use that to our advantage and we can play with a bit more freedom, knowing that we are playing for bonus points.
“It is a tough game but I always think that these are the ones that you should look forward to the most because there’s no external pressure, it is just the expectations that we put on ourselves.”
In Kirk’s time as Leicester City head coach, he has implemented a higher press and his side are set to go to Manchester United with the same approach this weekend.
He said “I hope that it is a high, aggressive press because that is what we have been working on all week. If it’s not, either I’ve got it wrong or the players have got it wrong.
“The way that we have been trying to play over the last few months is to play slightly higher, slightly more aggressive. We are quite happy with where we are with those areas of the game.”
Leicester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester United is scheduled to kick-off at 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
