Chelsea’s general manager Paul Green says that the club always expected Manchester United to be heavily involved in the Barclays Women’s Super League title race this season.
The Red Devils are currently top of the table, one point ahead of second-placed Chelsea. The pair meet at Kingsmeadow on Sunday to contest one of the biggest games of the season so far.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Chelsea’s general manager Green said that The Blues always expected Manchester United to be title rivals this season.
“I think we felt that it would be United, City, Arsenal as it is in that particular order really,” Green said. “We guessed that it would be us with those three teams.
“United are the league leaders and we have great respect for what Marc (Skinner) has done up there in his time as manager. We are going to have to be at our best to get the three points that we need on Sunday to overtake them and go top ourselves.”
Both clubs have scored 38 goals in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season, the competition’s highest goal return. Green went on to say that Chelsea will have to pay attention to Manchester United’s attacking threats but equally, The Blues have plenty of quality in the final third themselves.
He said “It is a bit of both. We are used to these big games, we are used to playing United and we obviously got a good result up there against them earlier in the season. They’ve got strengths, they’ve got qualities, we know that we are going to have to be at our best but likewise, we have got a lot of players who can score goals and a lot of quality in our own side.
“It is going to be a terrific game, we are all looking forward to it and we are ready to take on the challenge.”
Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United kicks-off at 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
