Brighton have a real point to prove against Birmingham City says Merricks

Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim head coach Amy Merricks says that her side have a point to prove against Birmingham City this afternoon.

The Seagulls travel to St Andrews to face the Blues in the quarter-finals of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.

Birmingham City have already caused an upset against Brighton & Hove Albion this season with Darren Carter’s side having won a FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup group match 3-2 back in October. When speaking ahead of the latest meeting between the two sides, Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim boss Merricks said that her team have a point to prove.

“They’re a team with WSL experience within it and they’re pushing to get themselves promoted,” Merricks said. “They’ve already beaten us once this season, so I feel like we’ve definitely got a real point to prove this weekend; not only with the momentum that we have built already but getting over the line and putting another good performance in will mean a lot going forward.

“We want to focus on the performance, the way that we can improve, the way that we can express ourselves. We want to make another positive performance.”

Reflecting on the defeat to Birmingham City earlier in the season, Merricks said that her side started too slowly in that match and found themselves chasing the game.

She said “We started too slowly in the first half but we picked up in the second half. With any team, I think if you start slowly, it becomes a real struggle to get back into it.

“Pushing forward to the present time, I think the way that we started against Manchester City was excellent and if we can do that again, we can really build on those performances going forward.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Birmingham City kicks-off at 2pm.
