‘We have to be brave’ – Chelsea boss Hayes previews Lyon showdown

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says that her side must be brave when they face Lyon in the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie at Stamford Bridge this evening.

The Blues lead 1-0 from the first leg. Guro Reiten was on target for Chelsea at the Groupama Stadium a little over a week ago. The South West Londoners may now be seen as the favourites to advance but there is still some way to go in the tie.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Chelsea manager Hayes said that her side will need to show bravery against Lyon to get the desired result from the second leg.

“We have to have the right mentality and we have to be brave,” Hayes said. “Their record speaks for itself but it is important for us as a team to impose ourselves, be aggressive in the right moments and be positive in everything that we do on and off the ball. We have to seek the opportunity that is in front of us and I know that the entire dressing room are looking forward to it.”

Lyon are the eight-time European champions. Hayes went on to say that Chelsea know all about the French side’s threats and they are expecting no surprises at The Bridge this evening.

She said “We know what to expect, they’ve been the champions of Europe over a long period of time for very good reasons, it is not like we are playing a team that are not used to being in that position, we know their threats.

“We’ve worked hard over a long period of time. We want these situations, we want to be in this game and we want to be in a position where we can impose ourselves and our game in our stadium, the way that we want to. We have a lot of experience too and it is important for the team to demonstrate that in the right moments.”
