London City Lionesses must avoid being title race twist says interim boss Runnacles

London City Lionesses interim head coach Nikita Runnacles believes that there will be further points dropped in the Barclays Women’s Championship’s title race but her side must ensure that they are not the culprits.

The Pride trail league leaders Bristol City by three points with three games to go. Both sides have challenging fixtures between now and the end of the season.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s trip to Southampton, Runnacles said that there will be further twists and turns but her side must avoid the drama.

“Definitely,” Runnacles said when asked whether there will be further twists. “I think the key is that we make sure the twist isn’t against us.

“We have to keep focused for the next three games because we absolutely believe that there’s an opportunity for us to still come away with the league title.

“Until the maths say differently, we will approach every game with the mindset that we can get to where we want to be.”

This weekend’s opponents Southampton are winless in five matches in the Barclays Women’s Championship. Runnacles believes that The Saints have been unlucky of late and her side will be taking nothing for granted.

She said “Southampton have played fantastic football this season. They’re athletic enough to cause problems with runs in behind and have played a little bit more direct since the start of the year. They’ve created lots of chances against some really good opposition, but have been unlucky with saves against them.

“Like when they came to Princes Park, we’re expecting a really close game against a very organised side. We expect their football to be free-flowing, with a little bit of direct running. Their recent results have been unlucky, they probably deserve to have more points considering their performances.”

London City Lionesses’ Barclays Women’s Championship fixture at Southampton kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
