‘We know that we can’t be complacent’ – Spurs taking nothing for granted says Jepson

Tottenham Hotspur’s interim head coach Vicky Jepson says that her side can take nothing for granted in the final weeks of the season.

The Lilywhites have five games left to play and find themselves just two points above the relegation zone. Long-term injuries have hindered Spurs’ progress this season, along with a loss of form.

There should be more than enough quality in the Spurs squad to guide the club to safety this season but interim boss Jepson says that her side know that they mustn’t get complacent, they will need to fight for every point.

“We can’t control what goes on outside of our own fixtures and we certainly can’t rely on other teams to do our jobs for us,” Jepson said when speaking in a Spurs press conference. “We know that we can’t be complacent in our last five games but confidence is high.

“We had a great friendly at the weekend, everybody was a part of that and I believe that we are in a good place both physically and mentally to execute what we need to execute over these next five games to accumulate the points that we need to stay in the WSL. It’s not going to be easy, no team will just gift us the points, we’ve got to earn them and that’s where we’ve got to make sure that we are not complacent in those moments.”

In-form Aston Villa are the visitors to The Breyer Group Stadium this weekend. The Villans will provide a significant attacking threat in East London and Jepson says that her side must implement their own game plan effectively to get a result.

She said “We have to compete with them. We are well-aware of the quality recruitment that Carla Ward has done at Aston Villa which has put them in such a great place this season.

“They score a lot of goals but they also concede them as well, so they’re not a team that we can’t create and score against.

“They are the third-highest in the league at counter attacking shots, so we know that transitionally, we are going to have to nullify those transitions that they have and they are quite direct. We need to deal with direct play, deal with transitions, so we will need to execute our game plan to nullify those strengths.

“We are really looking forward to it, we are in a great place as a group and we are at home, so what more could you ask for?”
