Arsenal have confirmed the devastating news that defender Leah Williamson ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in the club’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday evening.
The Gunners made the announcement via a post on their official club website just a short time ago.
Williamson sustained the injury just 15 minutes into the match against The Red Devils. She was able to leave the field without a stretcher but there were serious concerns over the severity of the injury.
Arsenal have now confirmed the news that everyone feared with Williamson set to be sidelined until 2024 as a result of the rupture of her ACL. The injury is not only a major blow for Arsenal, it also brings an end to Williamson’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 dreams with the tournament now just three months away.
The defender will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a period of rehabilitation. Williamson will have the full support of the Arsenal medical team throughout her recovery.
Arsenal now have three players on the sidelines nursing ACL injuries. Williamson has joined both Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema in the treatment room with the pair having suffered the same injury before Christmas.
