Reading boss Chambers expects relegation battle to go down to the final day

Reading manager Kelly Chambers says that she expects the Barclays Women’s Super League’s relegation battle to go down to the final day.

The bottom four teams are currently separated by just two points. Reading are the side occupying second-bottom in the league table and The Royals have a challenging run-in which includes games against both Manchester City and Chelsea.

When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Everton at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, Chambers said that she expects the battle for survival to go down to the final day and that Reading’s focus must remain on themselves.

“When you look at the bottom four teams, I think it is something that will go right to the end of the season,” Chambers said.

“From our point of view, we have had a good couple of weeks to look at different things and analyse the plan for the next six weeks. What we’ve had this week is a really positive week of training.

“Everything is in every team’s control. At the end of the day, we’ve got five games left and we need to get as many points out of those five games as we can. That’s how we are looking at it, we can’t look at other teams and what they are doing because in the WSL, anyone can beat anyone.

“The biggest thing is to concentrate on ourselves. We’ve looked at many different things on and off the pitch that will really help push us in the next five games and we’ve had a good week of training so hopefully, that can overspill into this weekend’s game.”

Of Reading’s five remaining games, three of them are to be played on home soil at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, something which Chambers sees as a real positive.

She said “We have three home games out of five which is a real positive for us. We’ve been really good at home this season, we’ve only lost three games. For us, that’s a real positive.

“It is just a case of taking it game-by-game and really building on our performances; making sure that they’re positive and we are positive individually to get the best out of each other.

“The WSL is wide open and we have seen that teams at the bottom can beat teams at the top. For the neutral, it is a very exciting time at the top end and the bottom end of the table.”
